Searching for success can be arduous, if at first you don’t succeed you attention can be drawn away from the prize you had originally set you sights on.
Take Ryan Babel for example. After signing for Liverpool in 2007 from Ajax, big things were expected of him and Liverpool, as the Merseysiders looked to win their first league title since 1990, but unfortunately for both of them, they are still waiting.
Distracted and disillusioned by his failure to shine at Anfield and help bring home the league title, he seems to have taken his eye of the ball and decided that his best route to success is as a rapper.
Teaming up with British hip hop artist Sway, Babel appears to be reaching for the heights of success that John Barnes enjoyed with New Order’s 1990 World Cup anthem World In Motion and The Anfield Rap, although it’s hard to tell if he will be successful, considering he raps in his native Dutch.
If though you believe the translations on one of his YouTube videos and I desperately want to, then it’s dubious whether or not he will receive critical acclaim for lyrics like “Keep your daughter in sight, or you will be my family” and “I know what time it is - I’ve just bought a new watch.”
Having avoided the limelight at Anfield, his rapping exploits have given us an insight into his life. Now I’m aware of his prowess as a lover-man who can steal your daughter, but cannot hold down a regular place in Liverpool’s starting eleven, but is always on time for training.
Sway is currently promoting the release of his new album Signature 2 and in an interview with the BBC spoke of his feelings as an ‘outcast’ from the British music scene, so the employment of Babel on a track is certainly a brave move considering his desire to become a mainstream star, but he’s clearly a fan of the wingers ability in the studio.
“The way he flips his flow is marvellous man, so I wanted him to do a bit - half Dutch, half British, and he really pulled it off man. I think it’s a track that people are gonna like”.
After Liverpool’s’ opening day defeat to Spurs, Babel may decide to spend more time in the studio, but enough of my yakking, have a look at the video below and decide for yourself if he should swap his position on the subs-bench for a shot at stardom as the next Appa (a Dutch rapper according to Wikipedia.)
