Having made a solitary appearance for County last weekend and posed and smiled politely yesterday for the team photos, Campbell has decided that the dream of leading County to the top flight is not for him and he has been released from his £40k per week contract by mutual consent.

The reasoning behind this bizarre decision to leave after only a little over a month at the club is that Campbell “could not adjust to the long-term nature of the project under way at Notts County” according to Executive Chairman Peter Trembling.

The 34 year old defender who was released by Pompey in the summer has been lured to Nottingham by former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, a lorry full of cash and the promise that County are set to become the Manchester City of the lower leagues, although I’m not sure that’s necessarily a good thing.
