The summer of big spending has continued at the Bernabeu with the announcement that Real Madrid have agreed to buy ailing car giant General Motors for an undisclosed fee.
GM have been looking for a buyer since filing for bankruptcy on June 1st and a bid from this summers most extravagant spenders has been predicted amongst the popular press over the past few weeks.
The arrival of GM at the Bernabeu follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo for a world record fee, Kaka, Karim Benzema and defender Raul Abidol for a reported total fee of £183m.
Despite breaking the world transfer record twice already this summer, Real are believed to be lining up further additions to the squad, including Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso, Valencia’s David Villa and Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery.
Seen by many as merely an ostentatious show of financial muscle, Real will be hoping the signing will prove to be another piece of the jigsaw in their attempt to buy success with their ultimate dream team and challenge for world domination.
A statement on Real’s website read: “The player will be tied to Real Madrid for the next six seasons. He will be presented on 6 July at the Santiago Bernabeu.”
A bulky defender with many different facets, GM’s influence spreads worldwide in a career that has had as many highs as it has had lows, but Real will be hoping for more of the form that saw them lift the individual title at the British Touring Car Championships in 2008, under the name Vauxhall.
GM will face completion for a place in the starting line-up from central defensive pair of Sergio Ramos and Pepe in a squad rapidly filling up with world class players.
Self appointed big club Manchester City were rumoured to also be interested in signing GM, as they also look to purchase a new squad of players, but so far with limited success.
The Premier League team were also in the hunt for Kaka in June, before the playmaker decided he preferred a move to the Bernabeu, delicately explaining “Manchester City and Real Madrid are two different clubs with different situations.”
The defender is now expected to sign a six-year contract when his move to Real Madrid is finalised.
